TANZANIA: KILIMANJARO, MACHAME ROUTE (08 Days, 07 Nights)

The Machame (Whiskey) route is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro. It has more natural rugged combination of routes which begin through the rainforest at Machame Village on the southwest side of the mountain. The path rises onto the edge of the Shira Plateau, down into the beautiful Great Barranco Valley, and then circumvents the Kibo massif counter-clockwise through the alpine desert until reaching Barafu Camp. The trek to the summit happens overnight to the crater rim on the steep slopes of the south-east facing Mweka Route. The trek winds through some beautiful landscapes and is completed in six days.

The last two days (the trek from Barranco to Barafu and then the overnight trek to the summit) require mental and physical toughness, due to the high altitude and short amount of time to rest before the overnight summit attempt. We have added an extra night at Karanga Valley Camp, at 13,000 feet (3,950 m), between Barranco and Barafu Camps, to help split the long day in half, and which is important for acclimatization. There are no huts on this route, overnights are spent in tents. Toilet tents with convenient and sanitary portable flush toilets are set up at all camps. You must be physically fit to take on this challenge.
